PARA dressage rider, Kathryn Gallagher not only wanted her horse Dreamer to perform well she also wanted him to look a million dollars.

Known as Waragon in the competition arena, Dreamer is a nine-year-old Warmblood who has plenty of natural energy, which Kathryn had to consider when looking for a suitable feed regime.

A Para Grade IV rider, Kathryn is based at Woodthorpe, near Nottingham and is currently competing at Medium level with Dreamer.

“It is very important to me that Dreamer has the very best and since I have been feeding TopSpec Lite Feed Balancer he has never looked back,” said Kathryn.

“He has built so much more muscle and is going better than ever, I couldn’t ask for more.

“As he has plenty of energy I didn’t want to feed him anything that would increase his exuberance.

“His skin and coat look fabulous and his temperament has stayed calm and relaxed which is just what I wanted.”

Kathryn trains with Andrew Day and is aiming to be a part of the Northern Team at this year’s Home International.

“Dreamer is going better than ever and is in great form, it is wonderful to know he is getting all the nutrients he needs to compete and train at his best and the nutrition team at TopSpec have been brilliant,” added Kathryn.

CHESHIRE-based showman and producer Robert Walker has started the early season shows with a host of wins on both new and established stars.

The TopSpec sponsored rider hit form at his first three shows when heading to the Sport Horse Breeding, North West Show at Myerscough, followed by Barton and then North of England Spring Show at Osbaldeston.

“At the Sport Horse Breeding, North West Show we were delighted when the wonderful Small Hack, Royal Engagement won his class and went champion for owner Lucy Smith-Crallan,” says Robert.

“He loved the arena at Myerscough and went really well. It was great to continue his form after going Hack Champion at last year’s HOYS and he has come back better than ever.

“At Barton the following week his winning ways continued when he took the Hack Championship again so we really can’t ask for more.

“Back to Myerscough and we took a new Novice Lightweight Hunter for Jill Day called Diplomat’s Choice.

“He is a lovely dark brown, five-year-old and we were really pleased with how he went, winning his class and then going Reserve Hunter Champion.

“Jill bought him as a two-year-old and he has developed into a really nice horse that we think a lot about.

“Like Royal Engagement, he continued to catch the judges’ eye, taking the Novice Hunter Championship at North of England Spring, Osbaldeston, a few days later.

“Our trip to Barton proved a great success when the Small Hunter, Golden Tasset won his class, the Lightweight Hunter, Ballard Bouncer took his section and then went Hunter Champion, and the Lightweight Cob, Chesterton also won his class before going Cob Champion – we certainly couldn’t complain and hope the season continues in this way.

“At North of England Spring our other Small Hunter and last year’s HOYS winner, Party Time headed his class to round off a successful few weeks.

“I am delighted to say our son Sam has also been in the winner’s enclosure when taking the Lead Rein Show Hunter Pony with Annandale Phoenix at Area 4A. They make a great partnership and we all love watching them together.”

This month we are delighted to start an exciting new blog from top show producer, rider and Team TopSpec member Robert Walker. With the Spring fast approaching Robert is busy preparing both his established and future young stars for the show season. Read on to find out more….

Hello and a warm welcome from all at our base at Sandy Brow Stables in Cheshire.

Thankfully winter is just about gone and we are getting longer days and a bit more sunshine.

To say we have been busy is rather an understatement as we have had nine two-years olds to start over the winter and I can’t wait for the 2013 season.

Yes I know we are only just going in to 2012 and you shouldn’t wish your life away but the team for 2013 is ultra special and very exciting.

There is a real mix with all hunters weights, lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight so I feel very fortunate to have so much to look forward to.

Anyway back to this year and with the first shows just around the corner I better tell you a bit more about some of my new horses for this season.

We have two wonderful four-year-old middleweights to bring out for our very loyal owner Jill Day.

Potters St Patrick is a chestnut youngster that came from well known inhand producer Moggie Hennessy and we also have the dapple grey, Morning Mist who was shown very successfully in Ireland by Michael O’Callaghan, who also produced our lightweight Ballard Bouncer inhand.

Another one we think a lot about is the large riding horse, Spotlight, also owned by Jill and by Power Blade. He is out of a Cavalier mare and just stunning. Also chestnut, he is a very extravagant mover and won’t be pushed as I always have the future in mind.

I have spent the winter season very busy hunting which I find is a great way for me to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the yard.

With the hunters roughed off and all the show horses brought in over the last few weeks have seen a real turn around with new heads looking over the stable doors, lots of trimming up being carried out and manes pulled. I prefer not to pull tails until a few days before the first shows, so we leave that job until early April.

As well as many new horses for my great team of owners, I am also very excited about a new four-year-old I have bought myself.

He is by the show jumping stallion Handel and just stunning. He is as yet unnamed but I will keep you up to date with his progress.

Having so many horses in, the yard can only run smoothly with a great back up team. For the second season our head lad is Padraig Delaney. He is very knowledgeable and a great asset with the young horses. We also have Sarah and Tom in their first season with us so they are looking forward to the shows.

The established horses will start in April, probably at the North of England Spring show at Osbaldeston with the first major aim being Royal Windsor.

The novices are such an exceptional bunch that the last thing we will do is rush them, so we will just see how the progress and tie in the shows accordingly.

Hope you have enjoyed reading my first blog.

Catch up soon Robert.

A riding instructor and partner at Russell Equestrian Centre in Southampton, Verity’s prize included tickets to the play of the moment – War Horse, a visit to the Ice Bar – the coolest place in town, and an overnight stay in London.

Said Verity: “London was fantastic, and War Horse was amazing, just magical – I was riveted to my seat!

“All I can say about the Ice Bar is that it was crazy, such a fun time and definitely a cool place to be.

“To have a night away from the horses was a bit of luxury and the St Martin’s Lane Hotel was brilliant.

SIX fabulous years of outstanding personalised customer service were recognised at the BETA Business Awards as TopSpec once again scooped the HAYGAIN Nutritional Helpline of the Year Award.

Winning the award for an unprecedented sixth year saw an outstanding achievement for the North Yorkshire based family firm, well known for their range of innovative horse feed and supplements.

TopSpec provide horses owners with valuable help and advice, and are well known throughout the industry for their multiple award-winning helpline.

One nominator said: “The advice I was given was very detailed, with suggestions for a feeding regime fully explained.” An incognito judge added: “The diet recommended was explained step by step, they also went through all the ingredients and I was given a time-frame for improvements.”

Nicola Tyler of TopSpec said: “We are very grateful to be recognised by the industry for consistent excellence in giving nutritional advice.

“Welfare and simplicity is always uppermost in our minds when giving advice but when we can help people to also achieve success in what they want to achieve it is very rewarding.”

The awards presented at the hugely successful BETA Gala Dinner are highly sought after throughout the industry and the remarkable sixth consecutive win for TopSpec met with a huge round of applause from those attending.

We were using another brand of weight building feed as he was not carrying enough weight, but he just became more and more unruly! We changed him to TopSpec Cool Balancer and he is a changed boy – even the children can ride and handle him. The picture is of my 11-year-old grandaughter Hannah Bexson riding him. Jenny Morgan
